Is it right for you?

Who Fiji suits

A strong fit for

Honeymoons, families and restorative beach time.

We would think twice for

Travellers who get restless on islands, because Fiji's gift is doing very little, beautifully, and anyone needing sights and cities will exhaust it quickly.

What we would want you to know

Mainland and island stays are not the same proposition.

Our research-led view

Fiji has been the finish of an Australian route we booked for clients, and this page draws on that planning and on research, not on a holiday of our own. Most of the work goes into the last leg: which island suits which party, and whether a boat, a seaplane or a night near Nadi makes the arrival easiest.

We have not been here ourselves yet and will never pretend otherwise. This advice comes from the operator, mapping, hotel and transfer research we do for real enquiries.

Where to stay in Fiji

1

Mamanuca Islands

FamiliesShort transfersSnorkelling

A scatter of small islands off Nadi holding many of Fiji's best-known family and couples' resorts, reached by boat from Port Denarau or by seaplane. Transfers are short and the water is clear and calm inside the reef, but day-trippers visit some islands, so the busier ones are not the place for total seclusion.

2

Yasawa Islands

CouplesAdventurersQuiet

A long chain of volcanic islands to the north, wilder and quieter than the Mamanucas, with high ridges, empty bays and small villages. A catamaran works its way up the chain, a scenic day in itself, or you can fly in by seaplane. Lodges are simpler and weather can disrupt the boat.

3

Denarau Island

Arrival nightsGolfFamilies

A reclaimed resort island near Nadi with big international hotels, a golf course and the marina for island boats. It is convenient and has the most restaurants in one place, but the beaches are dark sand and the sea is often murky, so it works better for a night or two than a whole stay.

Coral Coast

ValueFamiliesExploring

The south coast of the main island, lined with resorts behind a fringing reef, with villages, the Sigatoka dunes and river trips within easy reach. It suits families and anyone who wants to get out and explore by day, and it is usually better value than the islands, with a good resort pool mattering more here.

Pacific Harbour

DiversAdventureRivers

A small resort community further east that bills itself as Fiji's adventure capital, with the shark dives of Beqa Lagoon offshore and river trips up the Navua inland. It is wetter than the west and the beach is not the reason to come; what is in the water and up the river is.

Weather and seasons

When to go to Fiji

Fiji is warm all year, so the real question is rain and storms rather than heat. May to October is the drier side of the year, with days around 29°C, lower humidity and the sea still near 26°C. November to April is the wet season, with highs near 32°C, around 337mm of rain in January and a risk of cyclones that can halt boats and flights for days. The west of the main island, where Nadi and the Mamanucas sit, is noticeably drier than Suva in the east, which is one reason most resorts are on that side.

Worth timing a trip around

August

Hibiscus Festival

Suva's long-running carnival week, with parades, food stalls, fairground rides and a pageant. It is the capital's big party, far from the western resorts, so it suits travellers staying on the Suva side.

10 October

Fiji Day

The national holiday marks both the cession to Britain in 1874 and independence in 1970, each on 10 October, with ceremonies, flags and a relaxed holiday mood in towns and resorts.

May to October

Manta ray season

Manta rays gather to feed in a channel in the Yasawas, and resorts nearby run snorkelling trips out to them. Sightings are frequent in season but never promised.

Sand, shingle and swimming

Beaches in Fiji

Natadola Beach

A long, curving white-sand beach on the main island's south west coast, sheltered by a reef and usually calm enough for a swim. Horse rides and locals selling coconuts are part of the scene.

The Blue Lagoon, Yasawas

The sheltered lagoon between the Nanuya islands, named after the 1980 film shot nearby, with pale sand and clear water for snorkelling straight from the shore. Boats from nearby resorts come and go, so go early.

Monuriki

The small uninhabited Mamanuca island where the film Cast Away was shot, visited on day trips. There are no facilities, so take water and shade, and remember it belongs to the local villages.

Coral Coast lagoons

The reef protecting the south coast leaves wide, shallow lagoons in front of most resorts. They are good for snorkelling around high tide but can drain to rock pools at low tide.

Things to do

Things to do in Fiji

AdventureA

Sawa-i-Lau Caves

Limestone caves on a small island in the northern Yasawas, where you swim in a tall chamber and, with a guide, duck underwater into a second, darker cave. Visit when the sun is high and light pours into the first chamber.

Culture

A village visit and sevusevu

Many resorts arrange visits to nearby villages, where you present kava root to the chief in a short sevusevu ceremony. Cover shoulders and knees, take hats off in the village and never touch anyone's head.

NatureB

Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park

Tall, wind-shaped dunes at the mouth of the Sigatoka River, Fiji's first national park, with a walking loop through forest and over the sand to the sea. Go early, because the sand gets hot by midday.

AdventureC

Beqa Lagoon shark dive

Experienced divers come to Pacific Harbour for guided shark-feeding dives in Beqa Lagoon, with bull sharks among the species seen at close range. It is for certified divers only; non-divers can snorkel the lagoon's reefs instead.

NatureD

Navua River

Longboat trips run up the Navua River through a green gorge lined with waterfalls to riverside villages, often with lunch and a kava welcome. Bring something to keep your camera dry.

Culture

Firewalking from Beqa

The people of Beqa island are known for vilavilairevo, a tradition of walking over hot stones, and some resorts on the main island host performances. Ask your hotel when the next one is on.

On the water

Snorkelling from the sand

Many island resorts have coral within a short swim of the beach, with masks and fins free to borrow. Ask where the channels and currents are before you set off, and never stand on the coral.

HistoryE

Levuka

Fiji's old colonial capital on the island of Ovalau, a UNESCO World Heritage site of wooden shopfronts and churches facing the sea. Reaching it takes a small plane or a ferry from the Suva side, so it suits a longer, curious trip.

Food and drink

What to eat and drink

  • Kokoda

Fiji's raw fish salad: fresh fish cured in citrus juice, then mixed with coconut cream, chilli, onion and tomato, often served in a coconut shell.

  • Lovo

An earth-oven feast of meat, fish and root vegetables wrapped in leaves and cooked slowly on hot stones underground. Many resorts hold a lovo night each week.

  • Kava

Yaqona, a peppery drink of pounded kava root and water, is shared from a coconut shell at welcomes and gatherings. Clap once, say bula, drink it in one go and expect a slightly numb tongue.

  • Palusami

Young taro leaves wrapped around coconut cream, sometimes with onion or corned beef, and baked until soft and rich.

  • Tavioka

Cassava, boiled or baked, is the everyday staple on Fijian plates, often cooked in coconut cream or served beside fish.

Money

What Fiji costs

The resort you choose sets almost everything, from simple island lodges to private-island hideaways, and the island decides the rest, because once you are there you eat where you stay. That makes the meal plan a real part of the price, so we cost it in from the start. Transfers are the other line people underestimate: boats are reasonable, seaplanes are not. Kids-stay-and-eat-free offers are common at family resorts and worth chasing.

Flights and transfers

Getting to Fiji from the UK

There is no direct UK flight: Fiji is reached across the Pacific via the US west coast, or through Asia and Australia, which is why it shines as the finale of an Australian route rather than a standalone trip. Nadi is the international gateway, and the island resorts connect onward by boat or small plane.

Questions we get asked

Fiji FAQs

Which Fiji islands are best for families?+

The Mamanuca Islands, for most families. The boat or seaplane ride from Nadi is short, the water inside the reef is calm, and several resorts have kids' clubs and free meals for children. The Coral Coast on the main island is the value alternative, with more to do by day.

Should we choose the Mamanucas or the Yasawas?+

The Mamanucas for ease and choice, the Yasawas for space and scenery. Mamanuca transfers are quick and the resorts polished, while the Yasawas are wilder, with higher ridges, fewer people and simpler lodges further from Nadi. Many couples split a week between the two.

When is cyclone season in Fiji?+

Officially November to April, with the greatest risk from January to March. Many seasons pass without serious damage to the resort areas, but a passing storm can stop boats and flights for a day or two, so we leave slack in the plan and suggest insurance that covers disruption.

Is Fiji good for a honeymoon?+

Yes, especially on the smaller adults-only islands and in the Yasawas, where a bure on the sand and a quiet dinner by the water are the whole point. Couples who want activities and choice do better at the larger Mamanuca resorts. It is a place for resting, not sightseeing.

Do Fiji resorts include meals?+

Some do, many do not, and on an island with one resort that matters. Most offer a daily meal plan, which saves a shock on the final bill. We check exactly what it covers, drinks especially, before you book.

How many nights should we spend in Fiji?+

Five to seven for a beach finish after Australia or New Zealand, and ten or more if Fiji is the main event. Fewer than four barely covers the transfers and the unwinding. Splitting a longer stay between two islands adds variety without much extra travel.
