Is it right for you?

Who Las Vegas suits

A strong fit for

Couples, groups, celebrations and road trips.

We would think twice for

Anyone who dislikes noise, crowds and commerce, because Vegas is all three turned to eleven, and it makes no apology whatsoever.

What we would want you to know

Resort fees and the scale of the Strip alter the real cost.

We’ve been here

We drove into Las Vegas in late summer 2025, on a road trip with friends from Los Angeles through the Mojave and Calico ghost town, and planning trips there for clients we keep coming back to one lesson: the Strip is far longer than it looks from a hotel window. So we choose the resort by what you want on your doorstep, not by the nightly rate.

A plan to start from

Four days that don't revolve around the tables

  1. Day 1

    Centre Strip

Beat the jet lag with a slow walk along the centre Strip as the lights come on, the fountain show and an early dinner, then bed at a sensible hour.

  2. Day 2

    Summerlin and Red Rock

An early start at Red Rock Canyon with your timed-entry slot, back to the pool while the day is at its hottest, and the show you booked before you flew.

  3. Day 3

    South Strip

Drive out to Hoover Dam for the power plant tour and a look over Lake Mead, then an evening at T-Mobile Arena if the Golden Knights are at home.

  4. Day 4

    Downtown and Fremont Street

A lazy morning, the Mob Museum after lunch, the Neon Museum at dusk and a last night under the Fremont Street canopy.

An idea to react to, not a fixed package. We shape the real thing around your dates, your pace and what the flights are doing that season.

Where to stay in Las Vegas

1

Centre Strip

First visitsShowsWalking

The stretch around the Flamingo Road junction, where the fountain show, the biggest casinos and many of the famous shows sit close together. It suits first-timers who want to step straight out into the spectacle. Even here the resort next door can be a long, hot walk away, and rooms facing the Strip cost noticeably more.

2

South Strip

Concerts and sportFamiliesAirport access

The southern end sits beside T-Mobile Arena and, across the freeway, Allegiant Stadium, and it is the nearest part of the Strip to the airport. Themed resorts with big pool complexes make it the family end, and it suits anyone in town for a fight, a concert or a game. The centre Strip is a free tram, a taxi or a long walk away.

3

North Strip

Newer resortsConventionsQuieter nights

The north end has some of the newest and smartest resorts, sits close to the convention centre and feels calmer than the middle of the Strip. It suits returners and anyone in town for a trade show. There are long, empty stretches between some resorts, so most people take taxis rather than walk, and convention weeks push prices up here first.

Downtown and Fremont Street

ValueOld VegasGroups

Where the city began, with older casinos, a pedestrianised street under a vast LED canopy and the Mob Museum a block away. Rooms and drinks cost less than on the Strip and the mood is looser and louder, which groups tend to enjoy. Hotels are more basic, and a few streets beyond the lit-up blocks feel rough after dark, so take a taxi back.

Summerlin and Red Rock

WalkersGolfersReturners

A green, planned suburb where the city meets the desert to the west, with resort hotels and golf courses facing the Red Rock cliffs. It is for early risers who want desert walks at sunrise and a quieter pool, and who are happy to drive or take a taxi to the Strip for a show. Without a car it can feel cut off.

Things to do

Things to do in Las Vegas

NightlifeA

The Strip after dark

Walk the centre Strip once the lights come on, when the free fountain show plays every fifteen minutes. Use the pedestrian bridges at the big junctions and wear comfortable shoes, because the short stroll to the next resort rarely is one.

Culture

A big production show

Resident Cirque du Soleil productions, magic, comedy and headline residencies play most nights. Book the one you care about before you travel, as good seats go early, and pick up anything else on the day from the discount ticket booths along the Strip.

MusicB

Sphere

The giant globe just east of the Strip glows with changing images at night, and inside, films and concerts fill a wraparound screen. The upper sections are very steep, so anyone uneasy with heights should book seats lower down.

HistoryC

The Neon Museum

A boneyard of retired casino signs north of downtown, seen on guided or self-guided visits. Book an evening slot, when some of the restored signs are lit, and pair it with the Mob Museum and Fremont Street on the same night.

NatureD

Red Rock Canyon

Red and cream sandstone cliffs on the city's western edge, with a one-way scenic drive and short trails to viewpoints. From October to May cars need a timed-entry booking for daytime visits, so reserve before you go.

HistoryE

Hoover Dam

The 1930s dam that holds back Lake Mead, straddling the Nevada and Arizona border in Black Canyon. The guided power plant tour takes you down inside it; arrive early, as tours can sell out, and walk out onto the bypass bridge for the view back.

NatureF

Valley of Fire State Park

Nevada's oldest state park, a maze of fiery red sandstone with ancient rock art at Atlatl Rock and the striped Fire Wave. Go between October and April, because some trails can close in the hottest months and the rock throws the heat back at you.

NatureG

Grand Canyon South Rim

The classic canyon views, from the rim path and the lookouts around Grand Canyon Village. It is too far for a comfortable day out, so we suggest a night near the rim to see sunset and sunrise, when the colours in the rock are strongest.

AdventureH

Zion National Park

Utah's red-walled canyon, where free shuttle buses replace cars on the main scenic road from spring to late autumn. Wading the Narrows depends on the river level and flash-flood warnings, and the Angels Landing climb needs a permit won in a lottery, so plan both ahead.

SportI

A Golden Knights game

Las Vegas took to ice hockey with a showman's flair, and the pre-game spectacle at T-Mobile Arena is pure Vegas. The season runs from October to April, and it makes a loud, happy night out even if you have never watched the sport.

Food and drink

What to eat and drink

  • The buffet

Las Vegas made the all-you-can-eat casino buffet famous. The better resort buffets are now more banquet than bargain, and weekend brunch is the time to go, arriving early to beat the queue.

  • Shrimp cocktail

A downtown tradition since the late 1950s: chilled prawns piled into a sundae glass with a sharp tomato sauce, first sold for loose change to keep gamblers at the tables.

  • Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road

A long strip of Asian restaurants west of the Strip where locals go for dim sum, ramen, pho and hot pot at far lower prices than the resorts, with many kitchens open late.

  • A frozen drink on the Strip

Giant frozen cocktails in souvenir cups are part of a Strip walk, and carrying one along the pavement in a plastic cup is allowed. They are strong and sugary, so drink water alongside in the heat.

Weather and seasons

When to go to Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a desert city, and the month decides how much of it you can enjoy on foot. July days average 41°C, so summer means pool time, taxis between resorts and canyon hikes finished by mid morning. December and January turn the other way: bright, mild afternoons around 15°C, but after dark the average falls to 5°C, cold enough for a coat. March to May and late September to early November suit walking the Strip and the parks best. Rain is rare, yet a summer storm can flood the canyons with little warning. The events diary is the other thing to check: a big convention, fight night or Grand Prix week pushes room rates up sharply, so we look at it before fixing dates.

Worth timing a trip around

Early January

CES

The giant consumer technology show fills every hotel in the city for a week. Room rates soar and restaurants are packed, so leisure trips are better timed for later in the month.

May

Electric Daisy Carnival

A huge three-night dance music festival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, running from dusk until dawn. Rooms fill and the city stays up late, which is great if you are going and hard work if not.

November

Las Vegas Grand Prix

Formula 1 cars race along the Strip at night. Grandstands and road closures build for weeks beforehand, and race week is one of the dearest of the year for rooms.

Early December

National Finals Rodeo

Ten days of top-level rodeo at the university arena, with cowboy hats all over town and country bands in the casino lounges. A lively time to visit, and hotel prices rise to match.

31 December

New Year's Eve on the Strip

The Strip closes to traffic and fireworks go up from resort rooftops at midnight. The crowds are enormous and room prices peak, so book early, or watch from a bar or restaurant high above the Strip.

Money

What Las Vegas costs

Las Vegas rooms often look cheap because the resorts plan to make their money elsewhere. The real bill is in the nightly resort fee, parking, show tickets, drinks and dinners, and a Saturday night can cost far more than a Tuesday. We would spend on the one show you most want to see, booked before you fly, and on a car for the days you head into the desert. If the canyons are the reason for the trip, a night near the Grand Canyon or Zion is money better spent than a long coach day.

Flights and transfers

Getting to Las Vegas from the UK

Direct flights run from Manchester and London. Vegas is also the natural gateway to the south west's canyon country, which is where it earns its place in routes for people who would never choose it alone.

Questions we get asked

Las Vegas FAQs

Which part of the Strip is best to stay on?+

For a first visit, the centre Strip around the Flamingo Road junction, because the fountains, the big casinos and many of the shows are within walking distance. The south end suits concerts, sport and families, the north end is newer and quieter, and downtown is the value choice with more old-school character.

Can you visit the Grand Canyon in a day from Las Vegas?+

You can, but the South Rim is well over four hours' drive each way, which leaves little time at the rim itself. Coach and helicopter trips to the West Rim, on Hualapai land outside the national park, are quicker but show a different stretch of the canyon. We prefer a hire car and a night near the South Rim.

Do overseas visitors pay more at the national parks near Las Vegas?+

Yes, since January 2026. The Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon are among the parks that charge visitors who are not US residents, aged 16 and over, a surcharge per person on top of the usual entry fee. A single non-resident annual pass covers a car and its passengers and waives the surcharge, so on a trip to two or more of these parks it usually works out cheaper.

Is Las Vegas too hot in summer?+

At midday, yes: the July average high is 41°C, with warm nights. Most visitors cope by moving between air-conditioned resorts, pools and taxis, and saving any desert walking for the first hours after sunrise. Death Valley and the canyon trails are dangerous at midday in summer, so we plan those for the cooler months.

Is Las Vegas worth it if you don't gamble?+

Yes. Plenty of visitors never touch a slot machine: the shows, the food, the pools and the desert parks fill a stay easily. You will walk through casinos to reach almost everything, though, and smoking is still allowed on most casino floors, which surprises many British visitors.

Is it worth hiring a car in Las Vegas?+

Not for the Strip itself, where taxis and ride-hailing apps are easier than paying to park at every resort. It is worth it for Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam and the national parks, so a car for the desert days only, collected from the rental centre near the airport, is often the answer.

What is the flying time to Las Vegas from the UK?+

About 10 hours 20 minutes from Manchester. Las Vegas is usually eight hours behind the UK, so the first evening is the hardest: stay out in the fresh air until a normal bedtime and your body clock will catch up faster.
