Is it right for you?

Who Jamaica suits

A strong fit for

Couples, adults-only, all inclusive and music lovers.

We would think twice for

Travellers who want to explore independently at every turn, because Jamaica's resorts are gated for a reason, and the island rewards guided adventures more than casual wandering.

What we would want you to know

Airport-to-resort transfer time can be substantial.

Our research-led view

Everything on this page comes from research and enquiry work, and Negril is where that research has gone deepest: comparing its resorts, its long beach and the drive from Montego Bay for clients. It is why we raise the transfer with you before we talk about the pool.

We have not been here ourselves yet and will never pretend otherwise. This advice comes from the operator, mapping, hotel and transfer research we do for real enquiries.

Where to stay in Jamaica

1

Montego Bay

Short transfersFirst-timersBig resorts

The arrival city, with the large all-inclusive resorts spread east of town around Rose Hall and Ironshore, and the Hip Strip of bars and shops in town. Transfers are the shortest on the island. The catch is that many resort beaches are small, and walking into town brings plenty of attention from vendors.

Negril

SunsetsA long beachLaid-back couples

Seven Mile Beach runs north of the village with low-rise hotels behind it, while the West End cliffs to the south are where people swim off the rocks and watch the sun go down. It is the most relaxed of the resort areas. The catch is the long drive from Montego Bay and a steady stream of beach vendors.

3

Ocho Rios

WaterfallsExcursionsFamilies

A cruise port on the lush north coast, surrounded by rivers, gardens and waterfalls, with resorts strung along the shore either side. It is the best base for day trips. On cruise-ship days the town and the falls get crowded, and the beaches are smaller than Negril's, so it suits doers more than sunbathers.

4

Port Antonio

Quiet escapesRivers and covesReturners

The green, rain-fed north east, with small hotels and villas, the Blue Lagoon, river rafting and some of the island's prettiest coves. It feels a long way from package Jamaica. The price is a long journey from Montego Bay, although Kingston's airport is nearer, and more rain than the west.

5

Treasure Beach

Independent travellersGuesthousesSlow days

A string of fishing bays on the dry south coast, with guesthouses and small hotels rather than resorts. Come for fish eaten at a table on the sand and conversations with locals. The sand is darker and the sea can be lively, so it is no place for a lounger-and-pool holiday.

Weather and seasons

When to go to Jamaica

Jamaica is warm in every month, so the real choices are about rain, humidity and price. From mid-December to mid-April the north coast is at its driest and the sea off Montego Bay sits around 27°C, which is why Christmas and Easter sell out first. May brings the first of two wetter spells and autumn the second, with Montego Bay seeing around 118mm in a typical October. Between them, high summer reaches 34°C with sticky nights, and the hurricane risk climbs through August and September. Reggae Sumfest fills Montego Bay in July, so book early if your dates overlap.

Worth timing a trip around

6 January

Accompong Maroon Festival

The Maroons of Accompong, in the Cockpit Country hills, celebrate their ancestors and the peace they won from the British with drumming, feasting and a procession.

Around Easter

Jamaica Carnival

Costumed road marches and parties in Kingston through the Easter season, far more local in feel than the resort calendar suggests.

July

Reggae Sumfest

The island's biggest reggae and dancehall festival, held in Montego Bay, with headline nights that run until dawn. Hotels near the city fill early.

1 to 6 August

Emancipation and Independence

Emancipation Day on 1 August and Independence Day on 6 August bookend a week of music, food and national pride across the island.

Sand, shingle and swimming

Beaches in Jamaica

Doctor's Cave Beach

Montego Bay's best-known town beach, with white sand, calm clear water and changing rooms. It is run as a beach club with an entry fee, and handy for a swim if your hotel beach is small.

Seven Mile Beach

A long, gently shelving sweep of pale sand in Negril with calm water most days. Glass-bottom boats, jet skis and vendors work the busier stretches, so walk a little for a quieter patch.

Frenchman's Cove

A small cove near Port Antonio where a cold river runs into the sea, with white sand and jungle on both sides. There is an entry fee and only basic facilities, and weekends get busy.

Hellshire Beach

Kingston's weekend beach, loved for fried fish and festival more than for the sand, which is greyer and more crowded than on the north coast. Go for lunch and the local atmosphere.

Things to do

Things to do in Jamaica

NatureA

Dunn's River Falls

Terraced falls near Ocho Rios that you climb in a hand-holding chain behind a guide. Water shoes help, and arriving at opening time, or on a day without cruise ships in port, makes it far more pleasant.

AdventureB

Blue Mountain Peak

Jamaica's highest point at 2,256 metres, usually climbed overnight by head torch to reach the top for sunrise. Go with a guide and pack a fleece, because it is cold at the summit before dawn.

MusicC

Nine Mile

Bob Marley's birthplace and resting place in the hills of St Ann, reached by a winding road inland from Ocho Rios. Keen fans can pair it with the museum at his former Kingston home on Hope Road.

On the waterD

Rafting on the Martha Brae

A raftsman poles you gently downstream on a long bamboo raft near Falmouth. It is slow, quiet and suits all ages; the Rio Grande near Port Antonio offers a longer, more remote version.

NatureE

Luminous Lagoon

Near Falmouth, microscopic organisms make the water glow whenever it is disturbed, so this is a boat trip for after dark. A moonless night gives the brightest show.

HistoryF

Rose Hall Great House

A restored Georgian plantation house east of Montego Bay, wrapped in the legend of the White Witch. Daytime tours give more of the estate's history; evening tours lean into the ghost story.

WildlifeG

Black River boat trip

Boats head upriver from the town of Black River past mangroves, egrets and American crocodiles basking on the banks. It combines well with YS Falls for a full day on the south coast.

AdventureH

Negril's West End cliffs

Limestone cliffs south of Negril drop straight into deep, clear water, and jumping is a local rite of passage. Check the depth and the ladder first, and watch rather than leap after a few drinks.

Food and drink

What to eat and drink

  • Jerk

Pork or chicken marinated in scotch bonnet, allspice and thyme, then smoked over pimento wood. Roadside jerk centres beat resort buffets, and Boston Bay near Port Antonio claims it began there.

  • Ackee and saltfish

The national breakfast: ackee fruit cooked with salt cod, onion and peppers until it looks like scrambled egg, served with fried dumplings or boiled green banana.

  • Beef patty

Flaky yellow pastry filled with spiced minced beef, eaten hot from a bakery. Locals often tuck it inside coco bread for a cheap, filling lunch.

  • Escovitch fish and festival

Fried whole fish topped with pickled onion, carrot and hot pepper, with festival, a slightly sweet fried dumpling, on the side.

  • Blue Mountain coffee

Grown on the steep slopes above Kingston, mild and smooth and priced to match. A bag of beans bought in the hills makes a better present than anything at the airport.

  • Sorrel

A deep red drink of hibiscus, ginger and spice, often with a splash of rum. It is a Christmas tradition, and every household has its own version.

Money

What Jamaica costs

Jamaica's price is set mostly by the resort brand and the room category, because nearly everyone books all inclusive. Adults-only resorts and swim-up rooms sit at the top of the ladder, and the gap between a garden view and a beachfront room is wide. The money we would rather see spent goes on two or three trips outside the gates with a licensed driver, because the waterfalls, rivers and hills are what people talk about afterwards.

Flights and transfers

Getting to Jamaica from the UK

Direct flights serve Montego Bay from Manchester and London in season. The transfer is the detail that matters: Montego Bay's resorts are minutes away, Ocho Rios a couple of hours east, Negril an hour and a half west, and those road journeys are longer and livelier than clients expect, so we build them into the plan from the start.

Questions we get asked

Jamaica FAQs

Is Negril or Montego Bay better for a holiday?+

Negril for the beach and slower evenings, Montego Bay for the shortest transfer. Seven Mile Beach beats most Montego Bay resort beaches and the sunsets are the island's best, but the drive there is long after a transatlantic flight. For a short stay, or with young children, we lean towards Montego Bay.

Is it safe to leave the resort in Jamaica?+

Yes, with some planning. Visitors who use licensed transport, go out with a recommended driver or guide and avoid wandering unfamiliar areas at night rarely have problems. Licensed taxis carry red number plates. Most serious crime happens in inner-city areas visitors have no reason to visit, and we check the latest FCDO advice before every booking.

How long is the flight to Jamaica?+

About 10 hours from London Gatwick. Most flights land at Montego Bay, so the drive to your hotel is the part that varies: minutes for the city's own resorts, much longer for Negril, Ocho Rios or Port Antonio.

Is Jamaica good for a family holiday?+

Yes, if you choose the resort carefully. Several large all-inclusives near Montego Bay and Ocho Rios have kids' clubs, water parks and family suites, and the shorter transfer suits young children. Check whether a resort is adults-only before you fall for it, because many of the best known are.

Is the sea calm in Jamaica?+

Mostly, on the north and west coasts, where reefs keep resort beaches gentle and Negril's long beach is calm on most days. The south coast and the far east can have stronger waves and currents, so check the flags and ask locally before swimming.

When is the rainy season in Jamaica?+

There are two wetter spells: May into June, and late summer into November. Even a typical May brings around 124mm to Montego Bay. Rain tends to come as short afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle, and the sun is often back within the hour.
