Is it right for you?

Who Queensland suits

A strong fit for

Families, self-drive and longer Australian itineraries.

We would think twice for

Travellers set on swimming in the tropical sea in the UK winter, because November to May is stinger season in the north, and the reef trips and netted beaches manage it rather than remove it.

What we would want you to know

Car hire and accommodation dates must align precisely.

We’ve been here

Our own time in Queensland, in January 2020, took us up the coast road north of Cairns, and Queensland and Byron Bay have both featured in routes we have arranged for clients since. Both taught us the same thing: line up the car hire dates, internal flights and hotel nights exactly, and the long distances in this state stop being a problem.

The route

Two weeks from the river city to the rainforest

  1. Nights 1 and 2

    Brisbane

Ease in with a swim at South Bank's lagoon, a ride on the free river ferry and an afternoon feeding kangaroos at Lone Pine.

  2. Nights 3 to 6

    Gold Coast

Collect the hire car and head for the beaches: two theme park days, a lazy day on the sand and an evening in the hinterland for the glow worms.

  3. Nights 7 and 8

    Byron Bay

Cross into New South Wales for the lighthouse walk at dawn and a slower pace, then return the car and fly north.

  4. Nights 9 to 11

    Port Douglas

Base yourselves here for an outer reef day, a morning at Mossman Gorge and a drive over the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation.

  5. Nights 12 to 14

    Cairns

Finish with Kuranda by train and cable car, evenings by the Esplanade lagoon and a spare day in case wind cancelled the reef trip earlier.

An idea to react to, not a fixed package. We shape the real thing around your dates, your pace and what the flights are doing that season.

Map and stops

The places on the route

1

Brisbane

City breaksFamiliesArrivals

A relaxed river city with a free ferry along the water, good galleries and warm evenings spent outdoors. It suits a couple of nights to open or close a route, especially with children, but it is a city rather than a holiday in itself, and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms.

2

Gold Coast

FamiliesTheme parksSurf

A long line of surf beaches backed by high-rises, with Broadbeach the easiest family base: flat, walkable and between the sand and the shops. The theme parks are inland, so you need a car or park transfers, and the busiest central strip is loud at weekends and during the school leavers' celebrations in late November.

3

Byron Bay

CouplesSurfersWellness

Just over the border in New South Wales, Byron is a laid-back surf town with a lighthouse on the headland and a strong café and yoga culture. It pairs naturally with the Gold Coast, but rooms are expensive for what you get, and parking is hard work in summer.

4

Noosa

CouplesFamiliesWalkers

The smartest resort on the Sunshine Coast, with a sheltered north-facing beach, a river for paddling and a national park headland on the doorstep. It is calmer than the Gold Coast but dearer in school holidays, and the restaurants on Hastings Street need booking on summer nights.

5

Cairns

Reef tripsValueChoice

The reef's main gateway, with the widest choice of boats, a lively waterfront and a free swimming lagoon on the Esplanade, built because the town has mudflats rather than a beach. It is practical and good value, although the city itself is not a place many people fall for.

6

Port Douglas

CouplesReef and rainforestHoneymoons

A smaller, smarter town north of Cairns, with Four Mile Beach, a marina for outer reef boats and the Daintree close by. It suits anyone who wants both reef and rainforest, though it costs more than Cairns and goes quiet in the wet season, when some places close.

Weather and seasons

When to go to Queensland

For the tropical north, aim for June to September: Cairns averages around 27°C by day with low humidity and little rain, and the reef is outside its main stinger season. From December to March the north turns hot and heavy, with highs near 32°C and around 300mm of rain in February, when cyclones can close roads and cancel boat trips. The south of the state keeps a milder rhythm: Brisbane and the Gold Coast stay pleasant through winter, although the sea there feels cool from June to August. Queensland's school holidays in late June and early July fill the Gold Coast fast.

Worth timing a trip around

September

Brisbane Festival and Riverfire

Three weeks of theatre, music and street events across the city, with the Riverfire fireworks over the river as the festival's biggest night.

May to July

State of Origin

Queensland against New South Wales in a three-match rugby league series that grips both states. If a game falls in Brisbane during your stay, it is a loud, partisan night worth the effort of getting a ticket.

Early July

Gold Coast Marathon

A flat coastal course draws runners from around the world, with shorter races for families over the same weekend. Rooms on the coast book up early.

November or December

Coral spawning

A few nights after a full moon, many corals release clouds of eggs at once. Some dive boats from Cairns and Port Douglas run night trips to see it, but the timing is a prediction, never a promise.

Things to do

Things to do in Queensland

On the water

The outer Great Barrier Reef

The outer reef lies well offshore, so boats from Cairns and Port Douglas spend a good part of the morning getting there. Smaller boats visit more than one site and keep groups small. Book it early in your stay, so a windy day can be moved rather than lost.

NatureA

Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation

Ancient rainforest runs down to a reef-fringed coast north of Port Douglas. A cable ferry crosses the Daintree River, where crocodile-spotting cruises run, and boardwalks lead through the forest. Do not swim in the creeks or the sea here unless a local says it is safe.

CultureB

Mossman Gorge

A clear river tumbling over granite boulders in the southern Daintree. The visitor centre, run by the local Kuku Yalanji community, has a shuttle bus into the gorge and guided walks explaining how the forest provided food and medicine.

Day tripsC

Kuranda

A rainforest village in the hills above Cairns, reached on a heritage railway past waterfalls and left by a cable car over the canopy, or the other way round. Book both ahead in the dry season and go early, before the markets fill.

WildlifeD

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Brisbane's long-running koala sanctuary sits beside the river south west of the centre, with an open paddock where you can feed kangaroos. Arriving by river cruise from the city is the nicest way to get there.

FamilyE

South Bank and Streets Beach

Riverside parkland with a free, lifeguarded lagoon and a sandy beach, right opposite the city centre. It is the answer to a hot Brisbane afternoon with children, and the state art gallery and museum are next door.

Family

Gold Coast theme parks

Roller coasters, water slides and film-themed rides spread across several parks inland from the beaches. Multi-park passes cut the cost over a few days, and midweek outside Queensland school holidays brings the shortest queues.

NatureF

Springbrook National Park

Rainforest, waterfalls and lookouts in the hills behind the Gold Coast. After dark, glow worms light the cave behind the Natural Bridge waterfall; cover your torch with red cellophane and keep voices low.

NatureG

Noosa National Park

A coastal path from the edge of town winds round the headland past surf breaks and small coves, and koalas are sometimes spotted in the trees. Go early to find parking and beat the midday heat.

NatureH

Cape Byron lighthouse walk

A loop from town up to the lighthouse on the most easterly point of mainland Australia. Dolphins are common in the bay below, and from roughly June to November humpback whales pass close to the headland.

Food and drink

What to eat and drink

  • Mud crab

Big-clawed crabs from the mangrove estuaries, steamed simply or cooked with chilli. Expect to crack shells with your hands; it is a messy, sociable meal.

  • Barramundi

The north's favourite fish, with firm white flesh that takes well to the grill. Wild-caught is prized over farmed, and good menus say which you are getting.

  • Macadamias

The nut is native to the rainforests of south-east Queensland, and farms in the hinterland sell them roasted, salted and baked into biscuits.

  • Pumpkin scones

A Queensland tradition made famous by a former premier's wife and still sold in country bakeries: soft, golden and best warm with butter.

  • Tropical fruit

Far North Queensland grows lychees, rambutans, dragon fruit and custard apples. The weekend market in central Cairns is the place to try them at their ripest.

Money

What Queensland costs

Distance is the hidden cost here: Cairns and the Gold Coast are a flight apart, so internal flights belong in the budget from the start, along with a hire car at the southern end. The reef day is the spend we would protect. Smaller boats to the outer reef cost more than the big pontoon trips and give you more time in the water with fewer people around. Gold Coast apartments with a kitchen often work out cheaper than hotel rooms for families.

Flights and transfers

Getting to Queensland from the UK

Cairns, Brisbane and the Gold Coast all connect easily from Sydney by internal flights. The distances within Queensland surprise people: Cairns to Brisbane is a proper flight, not a drive, and we route it so you never backtrack.

Questions we get asked

Brisbane, Gold Coast & Queensland FAQs

When is stinger season in Queensland?+

Roughly November to May in the tropical north, when box jellyfish and the tiny Irukandji can be in the water near the coast. Reef boats hand out full-length stinger suits, and some beaches put up nets for the season. The beaches from the Sunshine Coast south are not usually affected.

Is Cairns or Port Douglas better for the reef?+

Both reach the outer reef. Cairns has the most boats, hotels and prices to choose from, while Port Douglas sits closer to the Daintree and the northern reefs, with a prettier beach and higher prices. Couples tend to prefer Port Douglas; budget and flexibility point to Cairns.

Can you drive from Brisbane to Cairns?+

You can, but it is more than 1,600 kilometres by road, so on a holiday we nearly always fly that stretch. Drive the short, scenic sections at either end instead, and arrange the route so you fly one way and never backtrack.

Why is Byron Bay an hour ahead of the Gold Coast in summer?+

Because Queensland does not use daylight saving and New South Wales does. From early October to early April, Byron Bay's clocks run an hour ahead of the Gold Coast, even though they are close neighbours. It catches people out with car returns, flight check-in and dinner bookings.

Is the Gold Coast good for young children?+

Yes, especially from a flat, walkable base such as Broadbeach. There are patrolled beaches, pools everywhere and theme park rides for small children as well as big coasters. The open surf can be powerful, so for toddlers the calm, shallow water at Tallebudgera Creek is a better bet.

Do you need a car in Queensland?+

For the Gold Coast hinterland, Byron Bay and the Daintree, yes. In Brisbane, Cairns and Port Douglas you can manage with tours and transfers. Match the hire dates to your flights, because one-way fees and returns to a different airport add up quickly.
